Artist's Assistant

Call for Armory Volunteers

The Hort Family will be opening up their home in Tribeca again this year during Armory Arts Week, providing a rare glimpse into one of New York's most exciting private collections of contemporary art.

 

We are looking for volunteers to help for both the exclusive Friday night (March 6th) preview as well as the Sunday Brunch (March 8th), where the Rema Hort Mann Foundation will also be open to Armory VIP pass holders, accompanied by bagels and coffee at Taymour Grahne Gallery next door.

 

Friday March 6, 2015 from 6.30 - 9.00 pm, call time is 6.00 pm.

Sunday March 8, 2015 from 9.30 - 1.00 pm, call time is 9.15 am. 

 

Volunteers will be asked to perform a number of duties, including greeting guests, managing guest lists, checking coats, monitoring gallery spaces, and ushering guests between upstair and downstairs areas of the Hort's home.

 

Please note, we have a few dedicated coat check positions available that we will be offering as paid. Please let us know if you are interested in one of these positions.

 

This is a wonderful opportunity to view the newly installed Hort Family Collection, representing some of their most recent acquisitions, and all proceeds from the events will go toward supporting the Rema Hort Mann Foundation.

Commission Opportunity

NYC preservation architect in search of an artist who paints in the style of the Ashcan School.  The painting(s) will occupy a lake lodge that is being preserved to match the time period and aesthetic of a community of lake houses built in the 1930s near Cold Spring, NY.  The subject will consist of a busy lake scene with boats, swimmers, people on the beach, the mountains and the diving dock.

We are also in search of an artist who can paint in the Hudson River / American Pre Raphaelite style of painting (William Trost Richards is his preferred example).  The subject matter is based on photographs of the surrounding area (Cold Spring, NY) which we would provide.

Responsibilities: We seek a candidate who is an artist and an enthusiastic educator with a strong desire to build the program and foster excellence in our students while teaching courses at all levels to majors and non-majors. The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to his or her personal studio practice and program/curriculum planning and development. The faculty member will teach a 3-3 course load for 2015-2016, that includes two ceramics classes (wheel and hand built), two three-dimensional design foundation classes, one sculpture class based on material exploration and one class in the liberal arts core curriculum. Position Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Earned Master of Fine Arts ( MFA ) with a consistent record of active engagement in the discipline. Candidates must demonstrate a broad knowledge of sculpture and ceramics, be able to articulate contemporary, historical and conceptual issues as well as manage the sculpture and ceramics facilities. Minimum 2 years college teaching experience beyond graduate assistantship.

Preferred Qualifications: An MFA in Sculpture with an emphasis in ceramics is preferred. Preference will be given to individuals with evidence of college teaching effectiveness. A commitment to contemporary art practice and good writing, speaking and interpersonal skills are also preferred. Applicants should have a strong interest in foundations level teaching for both majors and non-majors.

EFA STUDIO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION:

The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program is a juried membership program for professional visual artists. The program provides subsidized studio space for over 75 contemporary artists.

EFA Studio Program internships provide a unique opportunity to work directly with artists in their studios (as Artist Assistants) and actively contribute to the creation of exhibitions and programs, while gaining exposure to the inner-workings of a multi-faceted, non-profit arts space (as Administrative Interns). Each intern will split his/her time between assisting artists in their studios and working closely with EFA Studio Program staff in the offices.

EFA Studio Program is seeking enthusiastic and committed candidates who desire to learn about contemporary art and arts administration. Successful candidates will be amiable, adaptable, professional, social, and confident. Interns should be comfortable working as a member of a team—working well with direction, while feeling confident to provide his/her own insights. Barre Sculpture Studios Internship

Barre Sculpture Studios, a stone carving studio in Barre, Vermont with a strong base in traditional figurative/representational work, seeks intern to begin September 1st for 2-3 months. 

Though we work primarily in granite, at the moment we have two clay modeling jobs to be cast in bronze that need to be completed alongside a demanding stone carving workload. An over life sized Alexander Hamilton that has already been enlarged and needs finishing/detail, with special attention to drapery and colonial dress (frock coat, leggings, loafers, vest, etc.) The figure is made out of grey Klean Clay (oil based) The foundry where the figure will be cast is in Rutland, VT. This will be the main focus of the internship. A 1/3 sized seated figure that is nearly complete with an emphasis on achieving a likeness in the portrait. This will also need to be copied and cast, so proficiency in mold making is a plus. (see attached photos)We will also ask that applicants do minor organization work throughout the shop that wouldn't exceed 3-4 hours/week. In addition to clay modeling, applicants will be exposed to tools and techniques of the stone carving trade at a professional level in one of Barre's premier stone carving studios. We have ample stone to practice on if students are interested in exploring stone carving on their own time.

Compensation:
Monthly pay will begin at $1,000 per month depending on experience.  We will supply a room conveniently located directly around the corner from the shop, (406 N. Main St. Barre, VT) which is in a two bedroom that is just a 5 min. walk from downtown Barre City. Apartment comes with one parking spot, trash removal, no internet/cable, washing machine not included, but laundromat is located across the street. Utilities not included (to be split with roommate) and internet is negotiable with roommate. Roommate is a 21 year old female who works locally and is very nice.

The Fine Art Department at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design invites applications for an adjunct instructor of painting. The College is seeking a qualified candidate to teach FA283 Painting from Observation: Color, Form and Space I, a sophomore level course. The course is scheduled for Fridays from 10-5, beginning September 5th, 2014, and runs for 14 classes.

Course Description:
This course shares many of the objectives of FA281 Drawing From Observation, but in the medium of paint. Students will learn the characteristics, techniques, and applications of oil and water-based paint and mediums utilizing still life, interiors, and the human figure as subject. Students will be taught an integrated approach to accurate seeing, response to materials, construction of form, and design. Historic and contemporary examples of painting from direct observation will be studied to illustrate technical, formal, and aesthetic concepts.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong knowledge of the techniques associated with oil and water-based paint, and the ability to teach these techniques in conjunction with a sophisticated marriage of concept and context.

A portfolio of painting from observation is preferable. MFA or equivalent required.

Book Illustration

My employer is looking for an illustrator for a book she would like to give her husband for a wedding present.  The book will consists of a list of 50 reasons why she loves him.  Not every item on the list would need to be illustrated.  She is looking for someone who also has graphic design skills to do the layout out the book and also design the cover.  Eventually she will have it printed and bound.  If she finds the right person, this could be continuous as she plans on making more books as the years go by.
