Space will be about 7 feet wide and ceiling or sky high. The areas are not perfect lines so we hope you will be courteous and help each other out and work with each other. You are required to leave your space exactly how you found it (no holes in walls etc). 2014 Rome Prize - Applications Now Being Accepted

The American Academy in Rome is now accepting applications for the 2014 Rome Prize.

Each year, through a national juried competition, the Rome Prize is awarded to about thirty emerging artists and scholars working in the following categories:

Architecture
Design
Historic Preservation and Conservation
Landscape Architecture
Musical Composition
Visual Arts
Ancient Studies
Medieval Studies
Renaissance and Early Modern Studies
Modern Italian Studies

Rome Prize winners are provided with room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend of $28,000 for 11-month winners and $16,000 for 6-month winners.

NYFA's Doctor's Hours For Visual Artists

Have a new body of work no one has seen? Have a new website? Ready for some feedback? Come to NYFA's Doctor's Hours for individual, 20-minute one-on-one consultations with local curators, critics and gallerists. Get practical and professional advice in person from one or more arts professionals. Each appointment is $25, with a three appointment limit and the opportunity to share your work will be provided.

CONSULTANTS:
George Adams, Gallery Owner, George Adams Gallery
The George Adams Gallery represents and regularly exhibits the work of 20 artists and estates. Several of the artists - Jack Beal, Roy DeForest and Peter Saul - have exhibited regularly at the gallery (then known as the Allan Frumkin Gallery) since the early 1960s, while others, such as Michael Ferris Jr, Amer Kobaslija, and Kako Ueda, became associated with the gallery only in the past few years. In fact, the gallery has a long history of introducing emerging artists; since 1990 the gallery has given artists James Barsness, Jose Bedia, Yoan Capote, Don Colley, Valerie Demianchuk, Diane Edison, Andrew Lenaghan, Arnaldo Roche Rabell, and Sandy Winters their first New York solo exhibitions, and in April the gallery will mount the first exhibition in the U.S. of paintings by the Spanish artist Lino Lago.

Amara Antilla, Curatorial Assistant, Guggenheim
Amara Antilla joined the curatorial staff of the Guggenheim in September, 2010. In 2011, she became Curatorial Assistant for the BMW Guggenheim Lab, an international traveling laboratory for urban experiments and public programs traveling to nine cities over six years. She contributed to the mounting of the Lab in New York (August 3–October 16, 2011) and in Berlin (June 15–July 29, 2012). Previously, she worked as Research Associate for the rotunda retrospective, Lee Ufan: Marking Infinity (June 24–September 28, 2011). She also assisted the Asian Art Initiative, led by Alexandra Munroe, on acquisition and collection research. Prior to the Guggenheim she held positions at AW Asia and the Museum of Modern Art. Antilla studied art history at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Margaret Mathews-Berenson, Curator, Art Educator, and Art Advisor
Margaret Mathews-Berenson is an independent curator, art educator and advisor with special expertise in contemporary art and photography. She founded her own business in 1984 following a career in museum work (at the Philadelphia Art Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art) and book publishing. Since then, she has advised collectors (corporate and private) and curated numerous exhibitions for museums, galleries and non-profit institutions throughout the United States. Among her recent exhibition projects is Luminous Line: Contemporary Drawing in Metalpoint, which was shown at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College in Claremont, California (October 2010). Upcoming exhibitions include: Treasures from the Riverside Art Museum, a series of three exhibitions highlighting the permanent collection of the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, California (July 2011 through March 2012). A dedicated arts professional and advocate for the art community, Ms. Berenson advises on fundraising and development projects for arts organizations including ArtTable, Artists Space, the Dieu Donné Papermill, and Swiss Institute, among others. From 1997 to 1998, she was director of The Drawing Society and editor-in-chief of Drawing magazine. An accomplished lecturer and writer in the field of contemporary art, her articles and catalogue essays have been published in ARTS, American Artist, Drawing, The Pastel Journal and Sculpture magazines. Through her tour program, Art Today, she offers specialized lectures and travel opportunities. Recent tours included The Snow Show in Finland as well as biennials in Miami and New Orleans. As an arts educator, she has taught in the graduate program of Arts Administration at New York University and is currently on the faculty of the 92nd Street Y and International Center of Photography in New York.

Ian L. Cofré, Curator
Ian Cofré is an independent curator and writer based in New York City, working primarily with emerging and established artists locally-based and from Latin America. Having studied Political Science and Economics at Columbia University, his main areas of interest are examining alternative economies and their modes of art production, turning the lens onto underrepresented artists and marginalized communities, and contextualizing artists cross-generationally. He also has experience as a Director for a LES gallery and as a Studio Manager for a high-profile contemporary artist. Recent projects include co-curating the exhibitions Bigger Than Shadows, DODGEgallery (New York, 2012) with Rich Blint; and both Tracing the Unseen Border, La MaMa La Galleria (New York, 2011) and Southern Exposure at Dumbo Arts Center (Brooklyn, 2009) with Omar Lopez-Chahoud. Other shows include Behind Closed Doors (2011), a curated solo project by Manuela Viera-Gallo at Y Gallery and The Doubtful Guest (2010) at Kill Devil Hill in Greenpoint, NY. Recent publications include Arte al Día and co-writing an essay with Lopez-Chahoud for the Bronx Museum's Taking AIM!The Business of Being an Artist Today (2011) edited by Marysol Nieves. Profiles and reviews of exhibitions he has curated have appeared in The Art Newspaper, Arte al Día, and The Wall Street Journal, among others.

Jessica Dawson, Art critic, Reporter, and Professor
New York-based she is a University of California Los Angeles visiting professor at the University of California Washington Center, where she teaches courses in museum studies, art and architectural history, and urbanism. Dawson was on staff at the Hirshhorn museum from 2011-2013, and from 2000-2011 she was an art critic for the Washington Post, reviewing exhibitions at galleries and museums as well as reporting on the art world at large. Her writing has been published in The Daily Beast, Artnews, The Journal of the Archives of American Art, X-TRA, and many other publications.

Stephen Hepworth, Curator
Stephen Hepworth is a British born curator with over 16 years experience as a senior curator and director of a range of art venues in Europe and America. He has curated over 80 exhibitions and taught extensively on both continents. Previous to his move to the United States in 2007, to relaunch the University Art Gallery at the University of California, San Diego, he was based in London where he worked at Bloomberg Space, Jerwood Gallery, and The Tannery. He moved to New York in 2009 to become Director of Programs at Participant Inc, and currently is an art consultant and the curator of independent projects most recently Set-up at Jousse Entreprise, Paris (2012), others include exhibitions for the British Council, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and the Arnolfini in Bristol, UK. His exhibitions demonstrate an involvement with emerging artists as well as working with those who are already established, and others who have contributed to highlighting different approaches to making and thinking.

Jessica L. Porter, Gallery Owner
Jessica L. Porter, Owner/Director of Porter Contemporary Jessica L. Porter’s career came full circle five years ago when she launched Porter Contemporary, a gallery dedicated to showcasing emerging and established artists from around the world whose work embodies both skill and risk taking. The mission of Porter Contemporary continues to be based on founder Jessica L. Porter's vision of opening contemporary art collecting to a broader audience. Porter began her career with a dual degree in Art History and Foreign Languages (French and Japanese), quickly finding herself in the curatorial department of the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum. From there, Porter broadened her career by taking an opportunity to use her language background through sales and marketing in the art shipping industry. Porter’s interests only continued to broaden and soon became consumed with the research and investigation of issues surrounding stolen art, primarily during World War II. She soon entered law school focusing on art law and intellectual property issues while founding the Entertainment Art and Sports Law organization at the University of Maryland School of Law. After obtaining her Juris Doctor, she moved to New York and began practicing law. During the five years of practicing law, Porter realized that her passion still remained in the art industry and continued to be involved in the art market by working in galleries on weekends, assisting friends and colleagues purchase art and volunteering in museums. The seeds for opening an art gallery were soon planted and officially launched in 2006. Currently, in addition to running Porter Contemporary, she runs a consulting business utilizing her art and law background that focuses on assisting foreign galleries navigate the U.S. art market, she teaches courses on the basics of art collecting and is launching a new online art business in October 2011. Porter has a resounding commitment to being a leader and resource to other women and is the founder and president of Raandesk Women, a collaborative women’s networking group, a member of the Leadership Advisory Board for the Girls Scouts of Greater New York and is an active member and committee leader of ArtTable.

Kimberly Marrero, Curator, Private Art Advisor
Kimberly Marrero is a private art advisor and independent curator based in New York City. She has organized many high profile public exhibitions working directly with celebrated artists and art institutions worldwide. Ms. Marrero manages various private art collections for her domestic and international clients. She has also enjoyed a longtime affiliation with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York, serving as an active Education Committee member as well as a Sackler Arts Museum Lecturer. She is a devoted advocate for Arts & Education and has established a number of grants to support various Arts & Educational Programs for institutions throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Ariel Shanberg,Executive Director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock, Curator
As the Executive Director for the Center for Photograph at Woodstock, Ariel Shanberg oversees its wide range of offerings and serves as its curator. Founded in 1977 CPW provides a rich range of opportunities in which creation, discovery, and learning are made possible with a focus on emerging, underserved, and under-recognized voices in the photographic arts, sharing them with an international audience. In addition to his work at CPW, Shanberg has contributed essays to accompany publications on the work of many artists including Lucas Foglia, Stephan Hillerbrand & Mary Magsamen, Jeffery Milstein, Angelika Rinnhofer, and Sun-Joo Shin. He has also guest-curated exhibitions at such venues as the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (Philadelphia, PA), Islip Art Museum (Islip, NY), the Light Factory (Charlotte, NC), and the Dorsky Museum (New Paltz, NY) and the 2011 members’ exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography (Houston, TX).

Ryan Steadman, Curator
Brooklyn-based artist, writer, and curator Ryan E. Steadman has shown his paintings regularly since 2001, with solo exhibitions at Baumgartner Gallery, Envoy Enterprises and Karma, all in Manhattan. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at Greenberg van Doren Gallery and Room East, among others. Steadman has been a regular contributor to artforum.com and Modern Painters since 2011. In this short time, he has reviewed exhibitions by acclaimed artists such as Agnes Denes and Eugen Schoenebeck, as well as written essays on New York-based artists as diverse as Anthony Goicolea and Ethan Greenbaum. After having curated exhibitions in various spaces in Boston and New York, Steadman was recently appointed curatorial advisor to the UNTITLED. Art Fair in Miami Beach, where he is also organizing the artist-run and non-profit sections of the fair. Before this, he worked for such well-known galleries as Feature Inc. and Peter Freeman Inc. Steadman earned an MFA from Pratt Institute in 1999, and a BFA from University of Georgia in 1997.

New York State / Quebec Artist-In-Residence Exchange Program

PROGRAM:
Arts Services Initiative of Western New York, Inc. (ASI), on behalf of the New York State Council on the Arts in partnership with the Province of Quebec Council of Arts and Letters, is seeking proposals from qualified individuals from New York State to become artists in residence in the Province of Quebec in Fall or Winter, 2013.

ASI is seeking three professional and unique artists from throughout New York State to take residency for three months in the Province of Quebec in the fourth quarter of 2013 (or first quarter of 2014, if the residency begins in 2013).  While there the artist will create work and engage the community in a meaningful way.

STIPEND:
ASI, on behalf of the New York State Council on the Arts, will provide each artist a stipend of $9,000 to cover their costs for travel, materials, and labor.  The artist cannot be compensated in any way while in Quebec, and all displays of work and/or performances must be free and open to the public.

SUBMISSION/DEADLINE:
Respondents are required to submit one copy of the proposal as well as their letter from the host site in PDF form electronically as attachments to an email sent to asiwnyoffice@gmail.com prior to 12 pm noon EST on July 22, 2013.

Proposals received electronically after 12 pm noon EST on July 22 will be automatically rejected without exception and without review.
